Attica Brothers Foundation was started by survivors of the retaking of Attica prison on September 13, 1971 to care for the Brothers and their 50-year struggle for human rights.

The Attica Brothers, their families, lawyers, and supporters have been fighting for basic human rights for more than 50 years. Many of the Brothers were politically active before the rebellion on September 9, 1971, and they all put their lives on the line that day for better treatment.

Today there are only a handful of the Brothers left. Our goal is to support them in their retirement and support their causes in perpetuity.

A major component of our work is preserving the archive of Attica material that includes evidence from Attica Brothers Legal Defense and interviews with surviving Attica Brothers. It is vital that we maintain their voices for future generations.

Our Team

Our Board of Directors is made up of Attica Brothers, a radical lawyer, and longtime supporters of the Attica family. We are in daily contact with several of the Brothers and remain committed to their vision.

Our Vision

Attica Brothers Foundation has several interconnected goals in mind.

First is to support the Attica Brothers in a very literal sense by facilitating healthcare needs, providing community engagement, technical support for online and in-person speaking opportunities, and other requests.

Second is preserving, maintaining, and building the archive of Attica related material currently held by the Foundation. The archive includes both photo and video evidence of crimes committed by the State of New York, as well as first-person accounts from the Attica Brothers and their supporters.

Finally, we intend to add the voice of the Attica Brothers to the current conversation about policing, prisons, and race relations in the United States. Many of the Attica Brothers were politically active before they entered the prison system, and all of them have put their lives on the line for the cause of freedom and human dignity. Their perspective and their history lend a gravitas to the community that has been hard won by decades in this struggle.

We’d love to hear from you.
