Attica Brother Carlos Roché is blind and needs an aide.

Attica Brother Carlos Roché has an apartment in an assisted-living residence in New York City, but the building is consistently understaffed. Despite repeated requests and a doctor’s orders they haven’t taken him for a walk for more than a year.

Attica Brothers Foundation is raising money to hire a part-time aide to take Carlos for a walk twice a week. We would like to hire someone who specializes in working with a probing cane, and who can improve Carlos’ spatial awareness and dexterity.

We are also helping facilitate a relationship with The Lighthouse Guild, a group that specializes in vision, healthcare, and quality of life for people with Carlos’ condition.

We are still negotiating and gathering information on the cost for this intervention. Our current goal is to raise $25,000 to provide at least one-year of coverage for an in-person aide two days a week, and transportation to the Lighthouse Guild offices three days each week. Carlos is working with his doctors to cover these costs through Medicaid, but the timeline has been hard to discern. This funding will guarantee he has access to care in the meantime. We have started a GoFundMe to help us reach this goal. Please use the button below to donate.

He could still see shadows when this image was captured, but has lost even that small consolation.
